Paul the Praying Mantis

I was a couple of weeks off about the new magnets but they are on our Etsy site now! One is of a sneezing duck and the other is of a praying mantis. I entertained myself by writing the descriptions for the magnets. I think they explain more about my brain than the magnets.

"Things I Don't Remember" has also been accepted to the Boston International film festival as well as the Indie Spirit film festival. Check it out if you happen to be attending either of them. Then let me know what you think. But when you do that, try and place the mean comments in between two nice comments. For example, "I liked it! It was kind of loud at points but I liked it!"

A couple of months ago I met this dude Nick on the set of Welcoming Departure. He and I got really drunk on my birthday and I agreed to sound design a short film he was finishing up. Four and a half months later, Boooyaa.

Nature

I learned something about nature yesterday.

Branches from fig trees are extremely springy. Be careful when handling them. I was unfamiliar with them and their characteristics. My advice to those dealing with them for the first time is that they will act in a surprising way and will strike you in the testicles at their first opportunity.

This animation was made by the artist The Frantic Meerkat. I made everything you hear in the short.

Adding a soundtrack to this has been on my To Do list for quite a while. I started work yesterday afternoon and here it is!

I used Garage Band for the music and Final Cut Express for the sound editing. I spent way too much time trying to fine tune the effects in Final Cut. I really need to get a sound design program on my computer but I can't really afford such a thing right now.

Jessee and I and a couple of our friends participated in this years "Ed Wood 24 Hour Film Festival" at USC this last Saturday/Sunday. For those of you who don't know what a 24 hour film festival is here is a brief explanation...In many 24 hour film festivals, participantes recieve a theme and an object that needs to be incorporated into the final film. Once you recieve these two criterias, you have 24 hours to turn in a finished short film.

This year's theme for Ed Wood was "In & Out" and the object was a deck of cards or a playing card. It was a lot of fun and I'm super proud of what we came up with.

One note: This movie is ridiculous.
Another note: It's called "Love Machine 8012"

I have been keeping myself quite busy this week working on a script. The first draft is finished but there are a lot of holes to be filled (and I have to figure out a way to fill the holes while cutting one of the four pages).

It's Literally a Sandwich Fair

Talking about making sandwiches reminded me of The Sandwich Fair. If you're from the town I grew up in, you know exactly what this is. If not, click on the link and you'll witness pretty much a spot on representation of what the Sandwich Fair is all about. The reason it is called the Sandwich Fair is because it takes place in a town called Sandwich, Illinois (And if you clicked on that link you now know that the Sandwich Fair is really the only thing worth mentioning about Sandwich, Illinois [at least according to wikipedia]).

The fair is kind of a big deal for everyone in that area. My friend from high school visited me recently and before he left, his parents said something about him missing the Sandwich fair (his Mom later sent him picture messages from the fair).

That got us talking and we realized how misleading the Sandwich Fair is if you don't know that there is a Sandwich, Illinois. The Sandwich Fair has no sandwiches of note. I really wish they played off their name more and had a sandwich tent or at least followed a sandwich theme. Is that patronizing? I just think my friend would have reconsidered his trip to California if he knew he was going to miss a fair with thousands of types of sandwiches. I, for one, would not have blamed him for rescheduling.

To help ease the pain from lack of robots here is a picture of a breakfast I had the other day.

I hear stories about how lazy people are when it comes to cooking but I really am never shocked by any of them (I didn't make a sandwich the other day because I thought it involved too many steps).

Maybe it wasn't just the steps that scared me away...I think it also had to do something with looking for all the ingredients and then getting all of them out. Well actually that is a step. Anyway, I think I ended up eating bread and then cheese. Separately.

I'm sorry to disappoint. I do not have a robot to post. I need to scan them but the scanner is next to my girlfriends computer which is behind our couch. All because of the Robot House Party.

Robot House Party!

This is the reason I haven't posted a robot today or yesterday. What is it? It's the printing/cutting/pressing area for the new Etsy store Robot House Party! Robot House Party is going to specialize in making custom 2" by 3" magnets. What will happen is we will send a template to the customer, the customer will place whatever image or saying they want in the template (at 300 dpi), send it to us, and we will make magnets out of the image!

The machine is awsome. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but the magnets we've been making on this thing are the exact same as the kind you'd order from CafePress.

Jessee has been working on the banner and avatar pretty much all day while I have been trying to figure out things like store policies. Let me know what you think of both. I know that the policies department still needs some work but it's on it's way.

In related news: We produced 72 magnets for The Mincing Mockingbird and The Frantic Meerkat of Etsy today.

I believe that the name of this blog will soon change to Robot House Party. Don't be alarmed when it happens!

Robot wonders why the man won't give him a break

This robot is kind of me. I just want to recharge my batteries right now. I think part of it is that I've been fending off sickness all week. That and I've been trying to develop a script. It's not going so well because it's supposed to be a comedy and the combination of me being awkward as I explain it and it having dramatic elements makes it seem like a drama with a lackluster twist. I'm trying to go for a comedy with a fitting twist. Blaaaaaa. Email me if you would like to give it a read.

I have a pretty hilarious day dream yesterday. I was reading something about the Mona Lisa and I just envisioned this trailer to a movie that comes out in 2015 and it is the story of Mona Lisa. Not the painting, the person. I just pictured this terrible CG movie drama trailer where a CG Mona Lisa is being hit on and running from beggars and stuff. I just pictured Mona Lisa's "perfect face" showing CG emotions like being distraught and crying. I don't know if that makes sense. I picture the characters faces to look kind of like this. But the story would have less space travel and more of this sort of thing. Yes, basically I picture my Mona Lisa movie as being "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" meets "Girl with a Pearl Earring." Maybe this is the script I should be working on.

Robot realizes how much work it has to do

I am this robot.

The good news is that I'm no longer having dreams where I'm blind. The reason? I have found work.

I don't want to go into the details of what I'm going to be doing before I start doing it but the materials for my project are on their way. They are arriving sometime at the end of this week and until then I am preparing for the launch of Project Faraday (that's my code name for it). I'll announce the launch of the project within the next two weeks.

(note: This will not hinder my robot drawing. If anything, the project will enhance it.)

Today is the day I get a job.

UPS in Ontario, CA called me this morning. I had to turn them down because at least 1/4 of my paycheck would be going to gas for commuting. My paycheck wouldn't be that big before the 1/4 withdrawal so it's not really worth it. Also, I'm not too sure how long the death star (my car) could take a daily commute of 50 miles or so. I'm looking closer to home today.

This is the third time I've attempted to post today. I don't remember what interrupted me the first time but the second time my laptop turned it self off without warning. My battery no longer holds a charge. This wasn't a problem until a couple of weeks ago when I started unplugging my appliances when I'm not using them. I'll forget to plug my computer back in and it'll shut down after about 6 minutes of use.

I'm off to class. I've been walking to school (about a mile) and the only downside is that, when I get there, I am sweating an unholy amount. Yesterday I walked about 5.2 miles.

I have six hours of straight class today. I would be complaining about it but Jessee has 11 1/2 hours of straight class. Ha-ha.

Robot programed to combat growing zombie threat

I had a dream last night where I was in a hotel in Chicago with my Mom, my brother's and my girlfriend when zombie-like people began attacking the building. Just before I woke up I was yelling at my mom to jump out the window as zombies were breaking through the door. After she jumped I was half out the window when the zombies broke through. I started shooting at them with the nine in my left hand but it ran out of ammunition. I started firing at them with the revolver in my left hand as I struggled to get through the window. I was also semi-blind this entire time. They were about to grab me when I woke up. So that's how my day started.

I'm not sure what it means but I often have dreams where I become semi-blind. It's usually at this point when I realize that I'm dreaming but I'm still blind and it doesn't help that I know that I'm dreaming. This is just a guess but I think when I'm stressed in real life (trying to find a job) I get stressed in my dreams (trying to escape zombies) and become blind.

Now I'm going to try and find a job and then go to class. If all goes well I won't be blind tonight.

In other news, I'm just looking for work today and preparing myself for school tomorrow. I've also had the song "Throw Some D's" by the artist Rich Boy stuck in my head for the past couple of days. At first I couldn't stand this song at all but its been stuck in my head for so long I actually enjoy hearing it. Here is the reason I've had it stuck in my head. I also think that the lyrics are hilarious. Even though I don't consider what he does rapping, I still think shooting or cutting one of these videos would be pretty awesome.

Yesterday I was all about Girl Talk and today I'm all about DethKlok. And I just realized that they rhyme. Also, Brenden Small (creator of Metalocalypse and DethKlok) was born in Springfield, IL.

To tie to that, my girlfriend recently decided that my pointless super power is knowing everything about Illinois. This is not true. I do, however, know a lot more than many I encounter here in Southern California. For instance, I was working on a film set last year and got in an argument with a woman about whether or not Chicago was considered "East Coast." When I explained that the city of Chicago is in Illinois and therefore miles and miles away from the Atlantic Ocean (here's my google map) she replied, "Yeah, but, it's in the east." I think it is this widespread kind of thinking here that makes my knowlege of Illinois mythical.

Speaking of robots, I'm a big fan of mashups right now (Robots prefer them over all other types of music). I listened to a good amount of Girl Talk and The Beastles today while shredding things and stamping meerkats on envelopes.

A Robot A Day

I've been looking for a little project to do over the course of the next school year for some time now. At the beginning of the summer, I would draw each of my meals before I ate them. That didn't work out because A.) I can't draw well and B.) most of the meals I ate were noodles or rice and water (they didn't make for good pictures).

A couple of days ago I decided that I would take a napkin from each place I visited (if they had napkins). Later that day I decided that a napkin collection is pretty useless. Most napkins look the same.

I think I found the activity to fill the napkin taking/meal drawing void. I'm going to draw a robot a day and post them here. I've known since a young age that I am not good at drawing but have always enjoy it. The beautiful thing about my robots is that they are mostly composed of circles and squares.

Here is my first robot. I think he reflects my excited/hopeful mood for the future of this project.

I also had a thought today while I was attempting to plug in my cell phone charger. I have to deal with a ridiculous amount of cords. I'm going to count how many cords I'm using (and at one point had to wrangle into place) at this moment. My ear buds to my ipod. My mouse cord. The cord to charge my laptop. The cord to charge my hard drive. The cord to connect my hard drive to my laptop. My phone charger. My DS charger. The cord to my fan. The cord for the power strip. That's nine cords. That's not counting my desk lamp, the two cords for my printer and other various electronic charging cords. I don't think my parents had to deal with this many cords when they were my age and when I or people my age now have kids who are twenty I think wireless charging will be used much more widely. So that means (according to my guess that wireless charging will catch on and become more advanced) that right now is the only time people are going to be frustrated by tangles and tangles of cords.

How I Live

I realized yesterday that I really do live like a college student. The thought came to me at 11:30 last night when I was standing over the stove making Ramen noodles. I was using a fork to stir and I was planning on using the pan as a bowl. I realized that approximately twelve hours earlier I was doing the exact same routine and I knew that twelve hours into the future (about an hour ago) I would probably be doing it again. It would have been true but today I decided to eat a bowl of Easy Mac for lunch.

Pet Names

I've always had this fondness of naming pets the name of another type of animal. I don't own any pets so all I can do is try and convince my pet owner friends to do it ("Name your new dog Bear"). I think all pets should be named after another animal or animal noise ("Name your cat Moo"). Everyone should do this from now on.

My First California Earthquake

This morning was the first earthquake I've witnessed in California (I've felt a few rumblings in Illinois). I was a little surprised as to how fast I reacted and jumped into a doorway. I was also a little thankful that there was no one else at my house at the time because I would have defiantly pushed past anyone in my way to get to that doorway. Maybe not...Well probably...I guess we'll never know for sure...But really, in all likeliness I would have...

I'll walk you through what I was thinking during the earthquake. To set the scene: I was sitting on the couch in my room, DS in hand...

Event: The earthquake rolls in.
My Thought: "What the hell kind of construction is happening on the roof?"
The rest of the house joins the roof in shaking.
"Why work on the roof and the apartment underneath me at the same exact time?"
The shaking continues.
"..."
"...this is an earthquake."
"..."
"...what do I do in case of an earthquake?"
I bound for the doorway and hold onto it, DS still in hand. The house continues to shake.
"Okay this is kind of cool."
The house shakes a little harder.
"There is no way this doorway is going to do anything for me when this building collapses."
"..."
"...Crap I just wrote my check for next month..."
I look at the DS in my hand.
"Oh, I left my game going."
I pause my game.
"Nice. Good save, me."
House continues to shake.
"Why did I think about the video game? I feel like more important ideas should be coming to me at a time like this..."
"..."

"...I hope the stuff on my desk doesn't fall off."
The earth stops shaking. I stand up straight.
"That was it...?
"Huh."
I nod like I accomplished something. I suddenly stop and look outside.
"Oohhhh, I hope no gas lines broke. A) Because that would be dangerous and B) Because I really want to make Ramen noodles for lunch."
I sit down at my desk.

So that was my experience of the 5.4 earthquake. All of this happened probably within two minutes. The 3.8 aftershock experience was very similar except it lasted somewhere around twenty seconds and I was in the doorway within the first three seconds.

New Blog Title

I've changed the name of my blog from "Jordan Bagwill Eusebio" to "Ewok Dance Party." The reason being is that I've always like the ring of this phrase and thought my name was kind of a boring title for a blog that isn't ridiculously entertaining. A new exciting title makes up for content I imagine is described as, "eh" or at best, "ah."

I'll explain the phrase "Ewok Dance Party" for those of you who haven't heard me describe it. When I was younger I used this phrase to describe the ending of the film Return of the Jedi. Now, I mostly use the phrase to describe movies that end so perfectly for the main characters that there very well could be a final dance party scene in the deleted scenes portion of the DVD. I can't think of an example at the moment, but I will post one when I think of it.

(George Lucas decided that his trilogy ended so well for Luke and the gang that he needed to digitally add the rest of the Star Wars Galaxy having their own dance parties)

I haven't posted anything in a while but I promise that I will start uploading regularly from here on in. So keep checking back.

I recently did an animation (using Final Cut and Photoshop) for the artist 'The Frantic Meerkat' of Etsy.com (my mother for those who did not know this). I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. The concept came easily to me because the story is already in the original art piece. Initially I made it as a sort of test animation to see if she liked the style but decided to complete it after the rough cut took me so long. Tell me what you think.

Digital Arts Project Number Two

I originally had an idea to take a picture of a party scene with just a man in an Ewok costume in deep conversation. I couldn't find an Ewok costume or a party so I went with this idea.

Digital Arts Project Number One

Here is my first Digital Arts project. In my feedback my professor told me to push myself. It being the first time I've ever used photoshop I don't really know how to push myself further. We were supposed to create a self-portrait that said something about ourselves. As I preview the picture it looks all negative arty. This is disconcerting.

Beginning

Whenever I hear the word 'Blog,' I shudder. I basically created this so my family and anyone else who may be interested can be caught up with what I'm doing.

Today I am attempting to unpack (while listening to Carroll Cullerton). I will probably supplement this with episodes from 'The Office' Season Two.

It is good to be out of school and sleeping again.
